We hope everyone enjoyed the school holidays and had lots of rest!
This term the whole school Big Idea is ‘Sustainability’. Year 1 will be focusing on food going from ‘paddock to plate’. We will be going on an excursion on Tuesday the 30th of October to Edendale Farm to learn about where veggies come from, composting and worm farms, recycling and food miles.
In Maths we are continuing to work on counting patters such as counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. We are beginning to learn about about time. It would be great if you worked with your child on telling the time and reciting the months of the year. Even periods of time eg. “how long does it take to play football?”
We hope you enjoy the term and keep up the good work reading every night with your child.

The Year 1 students had a great time at the Science Discovery Dome this week. Here are some of their thoughts:
“I learnt that if the Earth doesn’t move that it would take a year to go to night time. I want to learn about how many stars there are.”
“I learnt that the weather on the South Pole is the same as the closest country near the sun. I want to learn why was the moon is out at lunch time.”
“I learnt why other countries have summer when Australia does not. I want to learn why the sun is bigger than Earth.”
Tomorrow is Book Day. We will be having a Year 1 parade at 9.15am on the basketball courts outside our rooms. We would love to see you there!

This term the Year 1s have been learning about Procedural Writing. Procedural Texts tell us how to do or make something. We’ve learnt that you need a title, materials or ingredients and steps (that are in the right order).
The Year 1s gave their teachers instructions to make popcorn and then wrote their own Procedural Text. It was a lot of fun!

Just a reminder that Parent Teacher Interviews are on next week for 1G, 1R and 1K (1P will have their interviews when Mrs Purcell is back from her trip).
If you have not booked an appointment please see your child’s teacher and we can arrange a time for you.
We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday (31/7) or Wednesday (1/8).

We hope everyone has had a fun and relaxing holiday. The Year 1s have settled back into the school routine and have been impressing us with how excited they are to learn! Our Learning to Learn focus has been on the School Values and kindness.
Thank you for supporting your child with their homework that is due on Tuesday the 24th. Students have a week to complete their homework, ready to share with the class on Tuesday. As part of their homework students need to tick how many nights they have read to a parent and their parent has read to them. Research undertaken on reading clearly states the high impact on a child’s reading development that an adult has when reading to them daily and listening to a child read daily. If you would like further information on this please let us know.
Year 1 classes are looking for anyone with some spare time to make playdoh for us to use in Maths next week. Can you please send it to school in a throw away container or zip lock bag.
Camp Quality Puppet Show
This week the Year 1s enjoyed watching the puppet show presented by Camp Quality for all students across the school. They taught us about cancer and how to support a parent, sibling, friend or loved one with cancer.
Thank you to Mrs Mellow for taking 1P while Mrs Purcell is jet setting around the world!
Have a great weekend!
The Year 1 team.

This week, as part of the Personal and Social curriculum the Year 1 students will have a Life Education session.
The content is focusing on Safety and is a flow on from what we will be learning in the classroom. The program will investigate safety in a range of situations and environments, people and places to go to for help, and how friends can care for and support each other. Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, this module helps children understand that a healthy lifestyle is an important step towards making positive healthy choices now and into the future.
What can you do at home?
We also encourage you to extend your child’s learning, by working with them to explore the activities and to start the conversations listed on these three posters. Please click on the links below to see the posters.
If you would like more information about the session, please visit the website. There are videos with parents about how to speak to your children about how to stay safe in the kitchen, car, when riding a bike and personal safety.

This week in Year 1 the students have begun learning about addition. We have started with revising the Friends of Ten. In class the children have been using an online game called Hit the Button. If your child would like to practise at home, please use the link below.
This is how the screen looks. Click on the green ‘Number Bonds’ button and then choose the first option ‘Make 10’ to practise the Friends of Ten.
