TELSTRA KIDS GRANTS
If you are a Telstra employee you are eligible to register Laburnum Primary School for a $1200 Telstra Kids Grant. From Tuesday the 15th October through to Friday the 25th October eligible Telstra employees will be able to register for this grant on behalf of our school.
You must register online by the deadline. The system will then invite you to complete the grants process so that the Telstra Foundation can gift the Telstra Kids grant if your application is one of the automated “lottery-style” entries chosen.
The more entries there are for our school, the greater the chance our name will be randomly chosen.
So if you are a Telstra employee please hop online as soon as possible and register.

Just a quick reminder that this Friday 6th September is Jeans for Genes day at Laburnum Primary School. So please encourage students to wear either denim jeans with their school shirt or a denim jacket and bring in a gold coin donation.
We are hoping to raise lots of money to support this wonderful cause and help raise awareness and much needed funds to support research into genetic diseases, their causes and potential treatments and cures.

This term the Year 1 students are learning how to write a procedural text. To assist your children it would be fantastic if you could share a family favourite recipe. Recipes are one example of a procedural text and the children would love to share the recipe of a delicious meal or desert that you enjoy at home. This can be hand written, including ingredients and the steps involved in making the meal or it can be photocopied from a recipe book. If the meal is eaten for a special occasion we would love you to add this information too. If you have any questions please ask one of the Year 1 teachers.

Good Afternoon Year 1 families.
What a wet week we have had.
The students have been thoroughly enjoying investigating and discussing the similarities and differences in children around the world.
To make their connections more real and exciting in this inquiry learning we are sending home a one off special homework task.
It has gone home in the take home book bag and we ask that over the next week if you could finish this task with your child.
This task will help your child have some knowledge about their families culture and they will be better able to participate in class discussions. There are so many rich experiences we would love them to share about your families culture.

It is hard to believe that term one has nearly finished. The past few weeks have been full of great learning and fun adventures. A few weeks ago many students dressed in their house colours and participated in our Twilight Sports. It was a beautiful night and lots of fun was had.
This term in maths we have learnt about patterns with shapes and numbers. It was amazing to see students creating repeating and growing patterns.
In Writing the Year 1 students have continued to develop their skills in recount writing. They also wrote some persuasive letters to Dr Dray to try and convince her that their new uniform design was the best.
This week the Year 1s have worked with their Year 5 buddies to create creatures. Some interesting creations were produced. The students have also enjoyed searching for creatures in the school grounds, using magnifying glasses to see some small schoolyard inhabitants up close.
We hope everyone has a well earned rest over the holidays.

The Year 1 mathematicians have been busy over the past few weeks learning how to count collections of objects efficiently through skip counting and identifying patterns. They have identified, created and repeated patterns both forwards and backwards using objects and numbers. In applied maths, the students have been investigating calendars, coming up with songs and rhymes to sequence days and months. They will be continuing learning more about counting, patterns and calendars for the rest of this term.
