Digital Excellence Awards – DEA

This week, all the Grade 1’s have been having discussions about Cyber safety.  All the Grade 1 classes met together and were introduced to DEA (Digital Excellence Awards), which they will be achieving throughout this year. To achieve these badges, students’ need to demonstrate their skills in being safe online and using the computers and internet appropriately.

One of the Cyber safety concepts we have been exploring is the acronym ‘THINK.’ This is all about ways we can stay safe online. ‘THINK’ stands for:

Tell your Mum or Dad if you see something online that upsets you.

Hide your password.

Interesting websites can be fun. Check with Mum or Dad if a site is okay to use before you visit.

Name calling or being mean is not cool and could be cyber bullying.

Keep your personal information safe.

We are very excited to achieve our Digital Excellence Awards badges and we hope to use all of our new skills and knowledge to always be safe online so that we can be happy and have fun!

iMovie in Grade 1

The students are very busy creating films using the iMovie application this term. Each student has an individual role in their film group e.g. Director, Leader, Cameraman or Camerawoman and Costume and Set Designer. The children are obviously very excited about their roles and putting their movies together! Most groups have begun making props and deciding on their locations to film. Next week we should see all of the groups out and about on location and filming their movies!

DEA Assembly

Dear parents,

On Thursday 18th September the Grade One’s would like to invite all parents to our third DEA assembly. It will be held in the staffroom from 2.50pm where each child will receive their badge. Some students from each class will be sharing the work we have been doing in relation to ‘Mind Mapping’. Students will still be dismissed from their classrooms after the assembly.

Hope to see you there!!

Can We ‘Mind Map?’ YES WE CAN!!

As you know, this term’s DEA badge involves the students creating mind maps using a range of applications and programs on the iPad and desktop.

We have begun to investigate the iPad applications ‘Kidspiration Lite’ and ‘Popplet Lite’ to practise the skill of mind mapping. Our explorations into persuasive writing have been an excellent way to introduce the mind maps. We are practising using a main idea and at least two supporting ideas-along with a range of tasks, as outlined last week on our blog.

A reminder that both these applications are free should you wish to download them.

Have a look at some of the wonderful work we have created.

DEA Silver Mind Mapping Badge

Hi parents and caregivers,

Just to keep you up to date with what the Grade One’s will be focusing on at school this term with our Digital Excellence Program. The students are working towards their Silver Badge for Mind Mapping this term. We are using two iPad applications to support our learning ‘Popplet LITE’ and “Kidspiration LITE’ both of which are free. The I can statements we are working to achieve are as follows:

-I can create a mind map with a main idea and add at least 2 sub topics.

-I can open and save my Mind Map.

-I can format my main idea so that it stands out on the page.

-I can add graphics using the symbol palette.

-I can make some of my writing a different size.

-I can make some of my writing have different coloured backgrounds.

-I can use the zoom button to view my work and make bigger and smaller.e

We look forward to seeing you at the DEA Assembly at the end of the term!!!

Kind regards,

Grade 1 Teachers

Happy Holidays!!!

With one day left of Term 2 it is hard to believe all the work the children have completed in ten weeks. You should all be very proud of the effort and outcomes they have achieved this term! I can guarantee there will be a lot of tired faces by the end of tomorrow!

On Wednesday the Grade Ones attended their second DEA Assembly.  Thank you to the parents and grandparents who were able to attend. I know it made a positive impact to the ‘energy’ of the assemblies having you there to congratulate them. Below are some pictures of the children who presented and some of the classes receiving their badges.  Again, you will be invited to attend our third DEA Assembly late next term. Stay tuned!
