This week, as part of the Personal and Social curriculum the Year 1 students will have a Life Education session.
The content is focusing on Safety and is a flow on from what we will be learning in the classroom. The program will investigate safety in a range of situations and environments, people and places to go to for help, and how friends can care for and support each other. Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, this module helps children understand that a healthy lifestyle is an important step towards making positive healthy choices now and into the future.
What can you do at home?
We also encourage you to extend your child’s learning, by working with them to explore the activities and to start the conversations listed on these three posters. Please click on the links below to see the posters.
If you would like more information about the session, please visit the website. There are videos with parents about how to speak to your children about how to stay safe in the kitchen, car, when riding a bike and personal safety.

What an exciting start to Term 2 it has been. The students have had a great first week sharing their holiday news. In class they have been busy revising how to choose a ‘Just Right Book’. These books give students the best opportunities to use their strategies to improve their reading. After completing individual conferences and testing with each child, the teachers have developed individual goals for your child. In class the students will use the suggested strategies to help them reach their goal. A copy of the most recent goal has been sent home with your child inside their ‘Take Home Book Cover’. If you have any questions please make a time to see your child’s teacher. We will be putting some information on the blog regularly that will give you ideas on how to assist your child with reading at home.
Don’t forget that hats are still needed till the end of April!!! Hats away in May.
Don’t forget Education Week is coming in May. Put the date in your diary (21st May, from 7pm till 8pm). This is a great opportunity to come along and see your child’s classroom. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Have a great week!

It has been a very busy time in Year 1. We have had a science incursion called, ‘Light and Sound’, a music incursion and an art incursion.
The students have really enjoyed these learning experiences.
In class students have received their wonderful new book boxes.
Every day the students have been learning about choosing a just right book and the different skills and strategies they can practice to become an independent reader. The students are enjoying reading a variety of books and have had an amazing time setting up their classroom libraries. It is great to see children asking to read when they have some free time. The best way to learn to read is by reading. Your child may bring home a book that you think is too easy for them, but it might be so they can practise their fluency and expression.
The teachers are busy setting individual reading goals with each child. These will come home inside the take home book cover early next term. When that goal is reached a new goal will be set and sent home.
Only one week till the school holidays. Over the holidays it would be great to keep up some regular reading. This doesn’t have to be just the books they bring home. Another great way for children to learn to read is to be read to often and research shows that boys who are read to by their fathers become better readers.
Congratulations to our Year 1 JSC reps. They have been doing an amazing job attending meetings and taking notes so they can report back to their classes.
Have a great weekend

It was great to catch up with many of our parents this week at the Meet the Teacher interviews. We look forward to working with you to help your children achieve the best they can.
This week take home books have started to go home. Inside the book cover you will find a new reading log book. This is where you record what your child has read. In future blog posts we will provide more information about how you can assist your child at home.
On Monday the teachers of LPS worked with Di Snowball on reading. We have begun Independent Reading in class. This involves the students in learning, how to choose ‘Just Right Books’ and to set Reading goals with their teacher.
Please make sure you give your child’s teacher a wave to let them know you have picked up your child. If they are picked up by an older sibling can you please ask them to come and collect your Year 1 student and give us a wave too. This is to ensure your child is picked up safely.
Please remember to return ICT Agreements. Your child will not be able to use the iPads until this agreement is signed by you and your child and returned.
Last, but not least! In class at the moment the Year 1s are writing recounts using the prompts, ‘First’, ‘Then/Next’ and ‘Last’. In maths we are counting forwards and backwards by 1s, 5s, 10s and 2s. In inquiry/wellbeing we are investigating what makes us happy and healthy.
Thanks and have a great weekend,
The Year 1 Team
