You can leave your hat on!

Welcome back to term 4. It’s hard to believe there is only one term left till Year 2. The children are busy learning about money at the moment, so please give them lots of opportunities to look at our coins and discuss how much they are worth.

This term all students must wear a sun smart hat. Children who do not have a sun smart hat are required to play in designated areas in the school. This does not include the junior playground. Caps that are not the Legionnaire style are not considered as sun smart. Please also make sure that hats are named so they can be returned promptly when misplaced.

Have a great week!

Holidays

Wow! Where did the time go?

It’s hard to believe it is already the end of Term 3. The children have worked really hard this term writing wonderful reviews about books and seasons. They have designed and created cardboard arcade games and learnt about why the seasons happen. In maths we have practised our subtraction skills and learnt some interesting facts about 2D and 3D shapes.

Next term is a hat term. Please make sure your child brings their named school hat on the first day of term.

Have a wonderful holiday and rest.

Calling All Inventors!

This week the Year 1 students have been busy designing arcade games, as the final part of our Inquiry unit. After watching a video called Caine’s Arcade the students have been very excited about using their skills to design a cardboard arcade game. Students are busily beginning to cut holes, tape boxes together and create prizes and tickets for their game. Along the way students are discovering that sometimes designs need to be modified and improvements made. At the end of next week the children will get to visit other Year 1 classrooms to see each arcade. Well done future inventors!

Reminder!!

If you have not returned your permission forms for the excursion to Scienceworks can you please send them along on Monday. Numbers need to be confirmed for buses.

As we will be on an excursion the students in Year 1 will miss the Book Week dress up day. There will not be a whole school parade. On Wednesday the students do attend an incursion with an author, which will be very exciting.

Next term the Year 1s do have a special dress up day as part of the Inquiry unit we will be doing, so save up your crafty skills for then.

Have a great weekend.

Inventors of the Future

Our Inquiry unit this term is ‘What Do You Need to Make It?’. In each class the students have been busy working cooperatively in groups, building bridges and designing new sports uniforms. Please continue to send in the following items:

If you have any newspapers, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, polystyrene balls and packing beads, rolls from paper towel or gift wrap, or shoe boxes, please send them along to your child’s teacher ASAP. Due to health reasons, please refrain from sending in egg cartons, toilet roll tubes and anything, which contained nuts.

Friendly Reminder

Please remember to return swimming notices. It is important that all the permission and medical forms are returned. Swimming is a great experience for all. Not only do the students have two weeks of intensive swimming, but they have an opportunity to practise being more independent and to socialise with other Year 1 students.

Have a great week

Welcome to Term 3

It was lovely to see the students settle back into the school routine this week and to hear about their holidays. It sounds like many students had sleep ins, went to the movies or had a special time away.
Teachers from 1H, 1J, 1M, 1P and 1R are looking forward to parent-teacher interviews during week 2. If you have not made a time, please see your child’s teacher.
This week in Learning to Learn, we have been setting goals, practising positive affirmations, revisiting our school values and discussing ways to be inclusive in the classroom and school yard. We have also revisited how to be a Bucket Filler and how a Bucket Filling classroom likes, sounds and feels.
We know that sometimes things that are unexpected can happen in the morning and this can result in your child being late for school. If you are late please remember to go via the office to fill in a late form. The morning is a very important learning time. Teachers spend time explaining the day and introducing the Literacy block learning intentions. Being late on a regular basis can affect your child’s learning.
Thanks for your cooperation!
Have a great week,

Education Week

Thank you to all the parents and students who came to celebrate Laburnum Primary School on Tuesday. The students were very excited to showcase the work they have been working on this year. The Year 1 students are very proud of their efforts and we are too. We are starting to look at minibeasts and the difference between living and non-living things. In writing from this week we will be looking at procedural texts.
Just a reminder, if you would like to sit down with your teacher in regards to your child’s learning please make an appointment, either before or after school.

Have a happy weekend,

Open Night Next Week!!

Term 2 is in full swing and we are busy learning how to write narratives, solve addition problems and care for the environment. Can you believe we’re nearly halfway through this term?! Time flies when you’re having fun!

A few friendly reminders for parents..

As the weather is changing the mornings are becoming very cold, please ensure your children are dressed wearing layers. We have the heaters on in our classrooms and the sun manages to peek through during the day, which means for those children not wearing layers they can become very hot and disgruntled. Additionally, please make sure all children’s clothes are clearly labelled with their full name and grade. We are finding that a lot of jackets and jumpers are disappearing and they are more likely to be returned if they are labelled correctly. It’s also time for colds and sniffles, so please ensure your children are getting plenty of rest to combat any bugs going around.

The following information regarding daily sleep requirements is from the Australian Centre for Education in Sleep.

  • Babies under 1: 14-18 hours throughout the day and night
  • Toddlers: 12-14 hours per 24 hour period
  • Primary school: 10-12 hours per day
  • High school: 8-10 hours per day
  • Adults: 7-9 hours per day

Please make sure your child begins each day with a drink bottle full of water. During class it is less disruptive to their learning if they can quickly get a drink from their bottle.

Also, next week is Education Week and all the classrooms will be opening their doors to students and their families between 7pm and 8pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to visit your child/ren’s classrooms and see some of the work we have been doing.

We hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend!

Gardens and Giraffes

Last week Year 1 boarded buses and headed off to the Royal Botanic Gardens. The children had an amazing experience. They visited the different gardens, made potpourri and planted a daffodil bulb. This excursion is part of our current Geography unit.

This week students attended a session in the Life Ed van. Harold the Giraffe helped children learn about healthy foods and exercise. It was great to see children confidently sorting foods into their groups; cereals and grains, vegetables, dairy, fruits, meats.

A big thank you to all the parents who assisted on the day of the excursion. We really appreciate you giving up your time to make student learning interesting and valuable.

Have a great weekend

Welcome back to Term Two!

It has been a great start to school this term. All the students have settled back into routines and have enjoyed sharing about all the exciting things they did on the holidays.

This term we will be looking at narratives. We have been enjoying some Fairy Tales and will be sharing some Aboriginal Dreamtime stories this week coming.

Don’t forget that in week three we have our excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens. A notice went home earlier in the week with some very important information about how to pack snacks and lunches on the day.

We hope you all enjoyed the break.

Regards

The Year One Team.
